In 1839 Charles P. Talbot and his brother Thomas formed C.P. Talbot & Co., a dyewood factory in North Billerica, Mass. In 1844 they expanded their business at a nearby site to include chemical manufacturing. This mill burned in 1853. In 1851 the Talbots had purchased another site upon which they built a woolen mill which produced flannels. C.P. Talbot ran the dye and chemical business and Thomas directed the woolen mill.
